[ She isn't expecting her phone to ring — and then isn't expecting Marcus to be calling her this early — but distracted or not, she isn't going to not answer. She just takes another sip of her coffee first. ]
[ As soon as John hears her answer, he leans toward the phone Mr. Keane is holding and cuts in. After all, if she really knows them — and knows how Darrow's weird magic works — then she should catch on to what's happened without Mr. Keane's help. ]
Are you Kat Rance? [ A brief pause, and he continues with a little less certainty. ] This is John. Sims. Mr. Keane says you know us.
[ On Kat's end of the line, there's a long pause while she tries to process a lot of information packed into a few short sentences. It isn't Marcus calling her, but John; it's also decidedly a child's voice, and he's asking about who she is like he doesn't already know.
She can put those pieces together easily enough — she's been in Darrow a long time — but also, holy shit. ]
Uh, yeah, this is Kat Rance. [ She pauses as well, then grabs hold of the thing he's said that's hardest to guess the meaning of. ] Us, do you mean you and Marcus? Or is Martin with you, too?
[ John's eyes go wide as he looks over at Martin. He never said Martin's name, and Mr. Keane never had a chance to mention it, so... so that means Kat knows Martin, too. That she expects them to be together, like friends, like Mr. Keane had said. ]
M-Martin's here, too. And Mr. Keane. He called you for us, he said that—that we're... friends. But we—but Martin and I don't remember.
[ He'd barged in because he thought he was being clever. Because he thought maybe he could catch them out, somehow, and make it make sense. But now, it all just feels childish, and rude, and he slumps in his chair a little. ]
[ That last bit doesn't really surprise Kat now, but she winces all the same. This place, she thinks, is seriously fucked up sometimes, turning people into kids, making them forget their own lives. Then again, maybe it's for the best that they're experiencing this together. At least they're sharing that weirdness instead of either of them being the only one. ]
Nothing to be sorry for. [ That, she can say easily, kindly. ] You guys must be pretty weirded out by all of this. But you're not the first people I know this has happened to, and, yeah, we're friends.
